  6. RC,I was so touched by your letter that I felt compelled to respond. I too have been in your situation – at a gym and feeling awkward, and lacking in confidence. I would offer some strategies to help quiet your inner voice. First, begin by telling yourself how awesome you are to make the decision to become healthier. And this is what you are doing, becoming healthy. Weight loss, muscle gain, and a toned body are by-products of your good choices. Second, question your thoughts. Why do you feel bad? Do you feel like you don’t belong? Do you believe that you are being judged on your existing body shape? Are you afraid of failing – that you won’t be able to keep pace? After your self-reflection ask yourself if you have any evidence to support these conclusions and note that perhaps they were based upon assumptions built upon false beliefs. Oftentimes, we create scenarios that have no factual basis and are false in nature. We assume, conclude, and own information built on false beliefs. Thus, it is very important to get to the heart of our beliefs and question if they are based upon facts.Third, offer yourself some options. Are you the type of person that does well in group fitness? Does this motivate you? Would feel more comfortable until you believe your fitness level is strengthened to work out by yourself or with a trusted friend or partner? Perhaps then, another option is to work out in the privacy of your home. There are some wonderful fitness programs available you may use which are conveniently performed on your schedule at your own pace. Whatever you decide, it is important that you find fitness activities that are fun for you to do. This will help you continue your practice until you have made it a habit. And remember, it takes only 21 days to make something a habit. That is essentially three weeks, one short month. Please accept my heartfelt congratulations for this amazing decision that you have made. Your healthy lifestyle choice will have significant impacts beyond those of physical well-being.
